As usual, I was the last to wake up, around 8 a.m. I heard Michael quietly moving about, and hoped I hadn’t kept him waiting too long. We chatted while we ate cold breakfasts (since we’d both ditched our camp stoves) — me, cold oatmeal and coffee and him, a granola bar and a handful of peanuts.

On day 3, I awoke to find my backpack eyeballing menacingly from the corner of my tent. Bonnie’s boyfriend, Jeff, was picking her up this morning and I’d continue on solo. I was sad to see her go. On the other hand, she was taking the gear and food that I’d decided to ditch.

Sun blinked through the trees and into my tent. I tentatively stretched, testing the after effects of carrying my pack. And was surprised to find that I felt OK, just sluggish. All my limbs moved as expected, I did not feel like I’d been hit by a bus, and my shoulders felt fine. My right ankle was sore, though.

Pack weight – like 500 pounds (actually, around 35)

I woke up excited, nervous, and tired on day one of my very first backpacking trip ever. And oh damn, my pack was heavy! Did someone slip bricks into it while I slept?
